COURSE DESCRIPTION: We all have beliefs about God and ultimate reality, and we're all staking our lives upon them.

We’re going to examine some of those beliefs in this class and the evidence for and against them. 

This is a class in Christian apologetics, that is, the reasoned defense of the Christian faith.

Why study apologetics? The first reason is because we are exhorted in 1 Peter 3:15 always to be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. 

Lord willing, you will walk out of this class with greater conviction and confidence to do just that.

This is a class for people who want to:

• learn more about evidence for the central tenets of the Christian faith
• be able to engage your unbelieving friends, family, and neighbors more winsomely and convincingly 
• be able to provide encouragement and direction to those going through a period of doubt 
• ... or maybe you just need more convincing yourself. 

Personal note: I was once lost and blind. I didn't believe in God and I thought Christians were... uh... well.. stupid. Or crazy. I needed to be convinced otherwise. The Lord used Christian philosophers - giving reasoned defenses of the major tenets of the Christian faith - to break down my intellectual barriers and bring me to Christ. In many ways, I owe my life to this stuff. I'm pumped to get to walk through this with you guys!

Adler stated, “We must teach by asking questions, leading discussions, and helping students to raise their minds from understanding or appreciating less to a state of understanding or appreciating more.” This is the approach we will take in World Literature Socratic Seminar. COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course, you will learn the basics of Micro and Macro Economics. You will work on projects with other students to understand the topics we discuss in class. We will work together to explore these concepts in a fun and interactive way.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:   Philosophy. What is it? Well, translated, it's the "love of wisdom." As lovers of wisdom (????? /"Sophia"), we seek her out. Philosophy, then, is something we do. An endeavor. A quest of sorts. It's an activity of the mind.

It's like hiking an incomprehensibly vast mountain range... but with your head. Wait, but your mind isn't really "in" your head, is it? Your brain is. But your brain isn't identical to your mind, right? And your mind isn't even physical, so how can it be spatially located?

Ok. Mind-hiking. It can be strenuous and require a lot of training to maximize your chances of getting out of there alive (trust me on this one), but it's also exhilarating and tons of fun and best done with some experienced trail guides and friends. And snacks.

In this class, we will be doing philosophy with each other (in-class Socratic sessions), communing with some of the most brilliant minds to have graced this Earth (in your weekly readings), and teasing out your thoughts in solitude (in your weekly journal entries).

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will explore the growth and development of the United States via American authors from its inception to the current day. The class will introduce various authors within movements such as Transcendentalism to expose students to the societal trends of the time. Class discussions will explore the writings and the intertextualities between movements and genres. Students will complete writing assignments as part and parcel of this course and must complete all required readings and homework assignments before class.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will explore the United States' history from its inception to today via the lens of warfare. Class discussions will center on building knowledge of the complexities and perspectives in the diplomatic, information, economic, and military domains of the United States that developed into the country it is today. Students must complete all required readings and homework assignments before class to ensure the discussion is valid and relevant.

PREREQUISITE: Students should be proficient writers and have experience in structured essay writing.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  In this one-semester course, students can unleash their imaginations and spark their creativity through their writing. Completing writing assignments such as short stories, blog posts, and poetry will allow students to fully develop their creativity and give them different outlets to express themselves. Students will not just be writing; they will expand their vocabulary, learn pre-writing strategies, and use story elements such as plot, character development, and conflict to create amazing, creative writing pieces. Students must come to class fully prepared, complete all assigned work, and be ready to participate fully.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This Earth Science class will use rigorous studies, engaging discussions, and outdoor exploration to instill a love and awe of the observable world. Using critical thinking skills, we will explore the Earth and learn how to observe it in a way that shows God's hand at work. The class will consist of eight units: geology, weathering and erosion, volcanos and earthquakes, oceanography and water systems,  meteorology, environmental issues, astronomy, and space exploration. This will be a hands-on class, including around 6 or 7 field trips, a geology tour through Maryland, a cavern tour, fossil hunting, a local swamp tour, a bay ecology tour, and a night astronomy lab. Field trips are optional but are strongly encouraged as they will enhance the lessons. Grades will be based on homework completion, discussion participation, lab performance, unit tests, and a final project.
